EL MICHELS AFFAIR MUNECAS

Leon Michels is the co-founder and go-to producer of Brooklyn's record label Big Crown, characterised by it's releases that offer a lo-fi, warm and classic recording aesthetic and bottom heavy production. Michels' band El Michels' Affair has released a fresh album Adult Themes, which takes the band’s "cinematic soul" aesthetic literally, sending the listener through a self-narrated whirlwind of moods and energies, thanks to its instrumental nature. 'Munecas' (meaning 'Dolls' in Spanish) is the penultimate song on the album. A soulful groove on the drums is complemented by a woody bass tone. Weighty emotions are carried by beckoning brass whilst a repeated guitar note acts as a high, spindly drone. From the onset 'Munecas' depicts a sentiment that blends a hispanic romance with classic American soul... imagine a 1960's Mexican rendition of True Romance. But as mentioned before, the beauty with El Michels Affair's instrumental style is that the songs write their own narrative unique to the listener. -Ellie Rose-Davies
